Lt.
Commander Phong Nguyen
Lieutenant Commander Phong Nguen was born on Obroa-Ski (the "Library
World")
roughly at the time of the First Battle of Yavin IV. As a child, he was
friendly to others,
and made quite a few friends, though his temper was shown a bit
too many times.
An interest in military history, tactics, weapons, and the like,
appeared as he became
older.
He had a strong interest in computers, and a running interest in
"slicing." Eventually,
he joined the Fringe and met up with Talon Karrde. Under Ghent's
tutelage, he
became a fine slicer, although (obviously) not as good as Ghent.
While he was serving with Karrde's band of smugglers, an incident
occured that
made him utterly hate the Mon Calamari. One of their small
anti-smuggler
raids nailed one of Karrde's bases - with Nguyen there.
In his words: "What the fuck do you need an MC80 for,
when you're engaging
a smuggler group? We weren't Terrik with an Imperial II."
Nyguen managed to reach the Z-95 Headhunters Karrde's group had
hidden
there for hasty escapes - the only one to do so. As he entered
space, the
Mon Calamari dispatched their starfighters to deal with him.
He reached the precalculated jump point just seconds ahead of the
MC-80s
B-Wings, who were trying to disable him with ions.
[Note: Precalculated jump points are where you calculate the
jump coordinates
well in advance, so you don't have to waste time calculating them
in emergencies;
very popular with smuggling groups - they always calc a few
emergency jump points
whenever they're in a system, so they are assured of a relatively
quick exit in case
trouble comes a-knocking.]
Nguyen thought he had escaped the Mon Calamari, but when he
re-entered realspace,
a Imperial Star Destroyer was directly in front of him. The small
snub fighter was
quickly disabled with a few volleys from the ISD's main ions, and
hauled into the
main hangar bay.
[Note: It is no mean feat to disable a snubfighter with ion
cannons designed to enage
capital ships, without blowing
the fighter to vapor. That is a testament to the skill of the
Revenger's weapons crews.]
Several Stormtroopers were waiting for him in the hangar bay. To
his suprise, he
wasn't taken to the brig. He was instead taken to the Admiral's
quarters.
Upon learning of Phong's name, Vice-Admiral Mark
Sheppard made an offer to him.
Because of Nguyen's slicing skills (he was able to crack the
various codes the
New Republic and Empire used (ILKO, etc.) ), he'd be offered the
chance to
'go legit', and work for the Imperial Navy.
If he refused, no hard feelings. They'd repair his fighter and
let him be on his way.
After thinking it over for a few minutes, Phong accepted the
offer.
Sheppard immediately commissioned him as an officer in the
Imperial Navy on the
spot, and assigned him to be his aide. (it was the only slot
open, until he could pull
some favors)
Nguyen then informed Sheppard about the location of a certain
MC-80, leading
to it's destruction at the hands of the Revenger's
turbolaser crews.
That was three years ago. As time passed, Phong quickly proved
his worth.
Quite a few patents are *his*, although under pen names. He
funneled most
of his income to Sheppard, allowing the Vice-Admiral to have a
ready reserve
of hard cash on hand to buy supplies for the Revenger,
or to 'convince' government
officials to look the other way and 'bend' rules to get parts
quickly.
Even with the cash, it became hard at times to get parts and
resupplies. Once again,
Phong saved the day with his expert slicing. He regularly caused
New Republic orders
to get 'lost' - meaning that they were transferred to
Sheppard's fleet.
For his exceptional efforts in procuring the items needed to keep
the Revenger from
falling apart, Phong rapidly rose through the ranks. His last
promotion, which was
six months ago, raised him to Lieutenant Commander. He has held
that rank since then.
